Frequently asked questions

How do children find pen pals?

Each active pen pal will browse the site with parental permission to view active pen pals to select their pen pal. All pan pals on the site are available and willing to exchange letters and mail.

Can children only send letters?

Mail can include letters, artwork, candy, photographs, postcards, and other items that ship well. All food items must be store bought with original packaging and ingredient list. Parent will receive an email if their child will be receiving a food item.

How do children send mail after being enrolled?

  • Step 1: Parent should complete registration form and enroll. Note: Enrollment is only available after the registration form has been completed.
  • Step 2: Students, alongside their parents, scan the available pen pals.
  • Step 2: Student creates item to be mailed and clearly labels who the mail should be sent to after review.
  • Step 3: Students should check the mail frequently for a response. Please keep in mind students are not required to respond to all mail.

Does BCFE protect student's safety?

Of course! Parents are required to submit proof of the child's age prior to being given access. This can be done by providing birth certificate, passport, notification of birth, or school/adoption records. Children are only permitted to send letters to their age group (ex: a 3rd grade student can only send letters to "elementary students"). Mail comes to BCFE prior to being sent to pen pal for review and documentation. Only subscribers are able to view student information.

What information does BCFE post publicly?

We use shortened student names along with city, state and age. This helps students locate others easier and keep track of pen pals. Parents and children should work together to create a short biography for post that include interests or hobbies. Proof of age documents, exact location will NOT be posted publicly.

How does the mailing and review process work?

Once mail is received by BCFE, it is reviewed, documented, and mailed to recipient within 3 business days of receipt. The documentation includes photographing or scanning incoming mail which is then emailed to senders' parent/guardian monthly. Letters with inappropriate content are emailed to parents immediately and discarded. ***Federal holidays can potentially extend this timeline. BCFE has no control over delivery times with the postal service and cannot guarantee delivery dates.***
